Aaron Porter has a portfolio of non-executive board, trustee and advisory roles. He is Chair of BPP University, Deputy Chair of Goldsmiths University and Associate Director (Governance) for Advance HE for whom he leads a national development programme for higher education board members and governors and undertaken over 50 governance effectiveness reviews.

Outside of higher education, he is a non-executive director on the board of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and was appointed by the Privy Council onto the Board of the General Chiropractic Council. In 2010-11 he was President of the National Union of Students, during the high profile debate on tuition fees. He has served previously on the boards of the University of Leicester, the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) and UCAS.
